Irodori Japanese Restaurant

We celebrated our Grandma’s birthday at Irodori Japanese Restaurant located along Havelock Road in Riverview Hotel. We went for the lunch a-la-carte buffet on a Sunday. They opened their doors at 11:30am and when we arrived at 11:45am, the restaurant was pretty packed. Luckily we made reservations!

This was when they were closing

We ordered a lot of food but I did not manage to capture everything. First up, the Ebi Mentai Mayo (Grilled Tiger Prawn). This dish was not on the menu so you just have to tell the staff. It really caught my attention as the meat was tender and the sauce was perfect!

We moved on to the Grilled Mackerel which was pretty decent. It tasted like the normal mackerel you get out there. The thing that was so mouth-watering was the Sashimi Moriawase, consisting of Shake (Salmon), Maguro (Tuna), Hamachi (Yellow Tail), Mekajiki (Sword Fish), Tako (Octopus), Tai (Snapper). They gave generous slices and every piece was so fresh! おいしい Oishī!!! I don’t usually eat Tako as i feel that it is a little chewy but, they managed to make me reconsider if I like Tako now. However, one downside is that the waiting time for the sashimi is VERY LONG. It took approximately 40 minutes for it to come.

We then had the Shake Maki (Salmon Mayo Roll) and Irodori Maki. Both dishes were not bad. It was good to finally have some carbs after eating so much sashimi. However, my sisters felt that they could go a little easier on the mayo as they found it too overpowering. My cousins could not eat anymore and they decided to have the Dobin Mushi (Tea Pot Soup).

Some of the dishes worth noting that I did not manage to capture were the Chawan Mushi (Steamed Custard Egg), Spider Te-Maki (Soft Shell Crab), Ebi Tempura (Prawn) and Shake Teriyaki (Grilled Salmon). However, I have to say I was disappointed with the service. Although the staff were friendly, they did not make their rounds and it was difficult to catch their attention to order food. The food also took quite long to come.

Overall, it was a good lunch as the food was good and they served quality items for the price we paid. However, I feel that they could improve on their service and speed. I would come back again but I guess I have to learn to be more patient!

Chye Seng Huat Hardware

So today I made a trip down to Chye Seng Huat Hardware. Located along the street of Jalan Besar Stadium, the cafe is really different from the normal cafes that you frequent. The exterior of the cafe replicates the look of an actual hardware store. But when you enter the cafe, you’ll be shocked by the interior. It is modern and hip looking and totally different from what you would expect. There is indoor and outdoor seating and we went with the latter as it was crowded inside.

The concept is different from most cafes. You have to find your own seats and you have to go inside to order at the coffee bar. The menus are available inside the cafe and it is mainly self service. They will only help to process your order and bring the food to you.

I ordered the Espresso with Milk ($5.50) and the Huat Breakfast ($17). The Huat Breakfast consists of turkey ham, mashed potatoes, grilled tomatoes, sausages, a mini croissant and your choice of eggs (scrambled, sunny side up, over-easy). It is like the typical “big breakfast” that you get at other cafes. Nothing too fancy. I heard many reviews about their coffee and how good it was. I have to say I wasn’t disappointed. The coffee was very aromatic and fragrant. If you are a caffeine addict, their coffee is a must try.

My dining partner went for the Crab Meat Aglio Olio ($16). It was pretty decent and I could see chunks of crab meat. She also ordered the Chocolate Cake with Ginger ($5). It was a very rich chocolaty cake. The taste of the ginger wasn’t very strong too.

I would return again but only because of the coffee and maybe the desserts. The food was really ordinary and it didn’t give me the feel to want to come back for the food. All the prices are net so its easier for you and you don’t need to fret over the crazy GST and service charge that you will usually encounter.
