Chye Seng Huat Hardware

So today I made a trip down to Chye Seng Huat Hardware. Located along the street of Jalan Besar Stadium, the cafe is really different from the normal cafes that you frequent. The exterior of the cafe replicates the look of an actual hardware store. But when you enter the cafe, you’ll be shocked by the interior. It is modern and hip looking and totally different from what you would expect. There is indoor and outdoor seating and we went with the latter as it was crowded inside.

The concept is different from most cafes. You have to find your own seats and you have to go inside to order at the coffee bar. The menus are available inside the cafe and it is mainly self service. They will only help to process your order and bring the food to you.

I ordered the Espresso with Milk ($5.50) and the Huat Breakfast ($17). The Huat Breakfast consists of turkey ham, mashed potatoes, grilled tomatoes, sausages, a mini croissant and your choice of eggs (scrambled, sunny side up, over-easy). It is like the typical “big breakfast” that you get at other cafes. Nothing too fancy. I heard many reviews about their coffee and how good it was. I have to say I wasn’t disappointed. The coffee was very aromatic and fragrant. If you are a caffeine addict, their coffee is a must try.

My dining partner went for the Crab Meat Aglio Olio ($16). It was pretty decent and I could see chunks of crab meat. She also ordered the Chocolate Cake with Ginger ($5). It was a very rich chocolaty cake. The taste of the ginger wasn’t very strong too.

I would return again but only because of the coffee and maybe the desserts. The food was really ordinary and it didn’t give me the feel to want to come back for the food. All the prices are net so its easier for you and you don’t need to fret over the crazy GST and service charge that you will usually encounter.
